Ruth is an MRes Medieval Studies student at the University of Birmingham, who has returned there after graduating with a BA (Hons) in English in 2012. Her research focuses on the role of magic and the supernatural in establishing gender identity in Scottish medieval romance from c.1375 – c.1700, referred to as the ‘Older Scots’ period. Though the themes of magic and identity are frequently discussed in relation to medieval English texts, the opposite is true of the Older Scots romances, which Ruth aims to remedy through completing her MRes. She intends to continue her work on Older Scots literature with further study at PhD level.
Having joined the committee in 2013, Ruth is looking forward to getting involved with the EMREM Forum and the range of opportunities it provides for supporting postgraduate students who share her interest in the medieval and early modern periods.
